How To Design And Send Greetings Cards Using Your iPhone 4S

With numerous birthdays and holidays every year, remembering to send cards to everyone can be a tall order. Believe it or not, Apple even offers an innovative solution to help you stay on track and send cards straight from devices like the iPhone 4S.

The iPhone 4S comes with an easy to use calendar, which allows you to save occasions like birthdays, anniversaries etc, and even syncs the birthdays of your Facebook friends. This makes it easy to remember, as you can get an overview of the entire week, month or year allowing you to plan ahead. You can even tell Siri to remind you of upcoming events, so you can buy a card with plenty of time to spare.

No matter how organised you are though, there will invariably be times when you forget to send a card in time. Apple has an app available in the AppStore simply called Cards. This app is free to download and allows you to create greetings card for all occasions.

Simply select a template (21 to choose from) or create your own from scratch. The latter adds a personal touch, and lets you customise everything from the image, message, font and colour scheme. Using the touch screen of the iPhone 4S, and using the on-screen menus, this is a simple task to carry out. To select an image, you can take a photo on the phone's built-in 8 megapixel digital camera, or choose and existing picture from the gallery. You can then type in what you want the front of the card to say, as well as a personalised message within the card. You can choose the font of your choice, and choose the theme and colour scheme of your liking, so everything about the card has been personalised by you.

Once you are happy with the design of the card, you simply enter the address of the person you want to send it to (you can even select the font of the front of the envelope), or use the existing information if it is saved in your contacts folder, and a real card will be sent in the post to the recipient. Sending a card from the UK costs a flat fee of £3.99 to anywhere in the world, which is actually less than the cost of many premium cards which would otherwise be bought on a shop.

You can also use the cards app to send postcards when you are on holiday. Thanks to the built-in GPS functionality of the iPhone 4S, the phone automatically knows your location and can instantly put this on the front of the postcard. Then simply choose one of your favourite holiday snaps or take a new one on the phone's 8 megapixel camera, and voila, you have your very own, personalised postcard.

All cards can be saved and resent to other people, which is ideal for wedding invitations or birth announcements, where the card is sent to more than one address.

The cards are printed on a traditional letterpress machine and uses premium materials, much like an expensive card from a card shop. The advantage of the Cards app is that you can design the card yourself using just your phone, and you can send them to any address in the world. Once a card has been delivered, you will receive a notification for your peace of mind.

Although it is unlikely to replace the traditional means of sending and receiving cards, the Cards app offers a great alternative.
