The HTC Sensation 4G: Reasonable Price, Uncommon Performance

Android devices capable of 4G network speeds have been out for awhile now and just about every new phone released is 4G-compatible. Just because stable 4G cellular networks are relatively new doesn't mean you need the latest hardware to get the most out of the experience. HTC's Sensation 4G for T-Mobile proves that it makes more sense to do things right the first time rather than stumble your way to success. As many users have already discovered, the Sensation 4G offers a terrific high-speed experience for a fair price.

Hardware and Features

One of the larger Androids on the market, the Sensation 4G features a 960 x 540 pixel, 4.3" qHD LCD capacitive touchscreen. Underneath the hood, a 1.2 GHz dual-core Scorpion CPU, 768 MB of RAM, 1 GB of internal storage and 8 GB worth of microSD storage give this particular 'Droid plenty of power. In terms of dimensions and feel, the Sensation 4G is remarkably light and thin for such a beast of a phone. At just 11.3 millimeters thick, it's almost as lean as the iPhone 4S. Finishing off the specs list is an 8 MP, dual-LED flash autofocus camera capable of 1080p video at 30 FPS.

OS, UI, and Software

The Sensation 4G runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which is actually a very worthwhile choice despite the release of newer versions of Google's operating system. On top of the stock Android platform, HTC has installed their famed Sense 3.0 UI. As far as software additions and bloatware are concerned, the Sensation 4G isn't overloaded with unnecessary programs. Clients for Twitter, Facebook and FM Radio come standard, but that's about it. HTC wisely opted to leave software selection to the end user.

Carriers and Networking

At present, T-Mobile is the only major wireless carrier to offer the HTC Sensation 4G. Verizon may have greater 4G penetration within the United States, but T-Mobile offers a fairly quick 4G experience as well in most major metropolitan areas. Field tests of the Sensation 4G demonstrate that it can consistently reach download speeds of 8 Mbps and upload speeds of over 2 Mbps. Those figures should continue to improve along with T-Mobile's infrastructure. There are faster phones on the market, but for most users' needs the Sensation 4G is more than enough.

The Verdict

Ultimately, the HTC Sensation 4G is yet another rock-solid mobile handset from Taiwan's premier phone maker. Though there are somewhat newer models available, few offer the same blend of stability, performance and speed for the money. With a contract, it's currently available for $149.99. All in all, the Sensation 4G is a wise choice for those who need a new 4G Android that's spacious and slick but don't require the newest device available.
