One of the more notable smartphone announcements from this year's MWC event in Barcelona was the LG Optimus 4X HD. One of the first smartphones to sport a quad-core processor, its spec list is equally impressive across the board. While the powerful processor is undoubtedly the most publicised feature of the handset, I will look at some of its other features in this article.
Camera
At 8 megapixels, the camera on the LG Optimus 4X HD is among the best in terms of the image quality it is capable of producing. Its resolution of 3264x 2448 ensures that still images are captured with high levels of detail and clarity. Video footage is also among the best; with the maximum setting of 1080p meaning the phone joins the ranks as one of the best in this respect also. LED flash, face & smile detection, image stabilisation and geo-tagging add to the camera's credentials, making it easy to get the best results first time.
Screen
The LG Optimus 4X HD has a screen which shares its processor's status as one of the best out there. At 4.7 inches, it is certainly sizable, but despite its large size it boasts an HD screen with a resolution of 720x 1280, with a pixel density of 312ppi. On paper, this blows Apple's retina display out of the water; its high resolution means the naked eye cannot distinguish individual pixels, so whatever you are looking at in the screen is displayed in the utmost quality and clarity. The HD-IPS LCD capacitive panel of this screen is not only the most advanced from LG to date, but among the best of any smartphone released from any manufacturer thus far.
Operating System
The LG Optimus 4X HD is not only impressive in terms of its hardware. The software it runs is the latest version of Android. Version 4.0 of the popular platform, also called Ice Cream Sandwich, boasts numerous innovations over its predecessor. Its impressive features include the ability to unlock the screen using face recognition software in conjunction with the front facing 1.3 megapixel camera. This feature, and the software itself was showcased on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and the LG Optimus 4X HD is one of the first since then to ship with this version already installed. Of course, the operating system also allows users to download apps from Google Play (formally Android Market), and the hardware means that even the most advanced app can easily be used on the device.
