Does the iPhone 4S Need to Compete in the Specs Race?

These days, device manufacturers are launching handsets that sport specifications we thought never possible. It all started with the LG Optimus 2X. It was the first to come packed with a 1 GHz dual-core processor. Soon after, other manufacturers have created smartphones that defy imagination. Motorola released the Atrix. HTC launched the first Sensation with its 1.2 GHz dual-core CPU and 4.3 inch display. Samsung launched the highly popular Galaxy S2. This handset is one of the most desired phones in the market despite being available since April of last year. It sports a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Plus display, a 1.2 GHz dual-core CPU, and an extremely slim profile at a mere 8.5 mm. Since most Android manufacturers are trying to outdo themselves, whatever happened to Apple? While everyone was releasing powerful handsets, Apple was still selling the iPhone 4. This phone sports a 1 GHz single-core processor and a 3.5 inch retina display. It was only in October of 2011 when Apple released the iPhone 4S.

Compared to Apple's fourth generation smartphone, the 4S was a large improvement. It packed the A5 dual-core chip under the hood. This is the same 1 GHz dual-core chip found within the iPad 2. However, everything else was the same. Both phones had the same dimensions, design, and screen size. Aside from being a mirror-image of its predecessor, the iPhone 4S does not seem to come with hardware as powerful as what the competition has to offer.

Despite sporting the same display, design, and dimensions, Apple's latest smartphone was still the best-selling smartphone in the last quarter of 2011. In fact, it helped Apple break its sales records compared to 2010. You may be wondering how a smartphone with less impressive specs compared to the competition sold better that every individual phone manufacturer.

There a number of reasons why the handset proved to be successful. First of all, the iPhone 4S comes with an app that no other smartphone comes with. Not even other smartphones in Apple's roster comes with this app. This is Siri. This is Apple's voice-activated personal assistant. Ever since Siri was introduced, users just couldn't get enough of her.

Another reason why the handset is so successful is apps. The Apple App Store is still the biggest app offering in existence. Here, users can get to purchase anything from games, tools, and eBooks.

As you can see, the iPhone 4S does not need to compete in the specs race. Despite offer inferior specs compared to the competition, it remains the best-selling phone in the market.
